Reading First

Iberia Parish’s Reading First Program is in operation at Hopkins, Jeanerette, Johnston, North Street, Park, Pesson, and Sugarland Elementary Schools. Reading First is a national initiative funded under No Child Left Behind, Title I Part B. The purpose of Reading First is as follows:

  1. To ensure that all children in America learn to read well by the end of third grade.
  2. To provide the necessary assistance for the implementation of research-based reading programs.
  3. To provide professional development to all teachers, including special education teachers, on the skills needed to teach reading effectively.
  4. To train teachers on how to screen, diagnose, and monitor progress and outcomes in order to overcome reading barriers for students.
