Child Nutrition Programs
A variety of nutritional services are provided by the Iberia Parish School Board Student Nutrition Program, generally known as School Food Service. On a daily basis, breakfast and lunch are available in all schools to students, faculty, and school visitors (upon advance notice). Students are eligible to receive after school snacks while attending their school's After Care Program. Summer Food Service, sponsored annually by the Student Nutrition Program, is available to all children in Iberia Parish. Meals are nutritionally adequate, attractively served, moderately priced, and serve as an extension of nutrition education into the homes of children. School Food Service also participates in many academic and athletic programs at the individual school site where refreshments or meals are requested.
Meal Benefits
Because the National School Lunch Program is federally subsidized, students may be eligible for free or reduced priced meals. Parents may apply for Meal Benefits by completing the Multi-Child Application For Meal Benefits Form provided to every student at the beginning of the school year; however, application forms are available for processing throughout the school year.
Diet Modifications
Meal service to students with special dietary needs due to a disability or medical condition is available at all school cafeterias. By submitting the Student Diet Modification Form available at each school, the physician's diet order and parent approval allow the cafeteria manager to make the menu changes necessary to provide appropriate nutritional care for the student.
Meal Service
Meals served to students are planned according to provisions of the National School Lunch Act. Lunch meals provide approximately one-third of the
Recommended Dietary Allowances for students of each age group and breakfast contributes about one-fifth of their daily nutritional needs.
Iberia Parish school cafeterias serve an average of 16,000 breakfast, lunch, and snack meals on a daily basis.
Payment for Meal Service
All meal service to students and adults must be pre-paid. Charging meals to students and adult accounts is not permitted. Reduced, full pay, and adult accounts should contain advance funds to cover meal costs. Parents are responsible for: 1) paying for student meals; or 2) applying for reduced or free meal benefits; or 3) providing a meal from home. Notification will be given when meal account is depleted to a certain $ amount. If the student account is depleted after 3 notifications, the parent will be called to bring either payment or a meal from home (at this time an alternate meal will be offered to students with NO funds in their account).
